Downspouts are the part of the drainage system nobody inspects, because the blockage is hidden inside the pipe. A trough can look perfectly clear from the ground and still back up every time it rains, because the elbow at the bottom is packed with compacted debris.
The good news is that a blocked downspout announces itself if you know what to watch for during the next steady rainfall.
The six signs
- Water overflowing at one specific corner of the house while the rest of the eaves drain normally.
- No water, or barely a trickle, coming out of the bottom of a downspout during real rain.
- A hollow or rattling sound in the pipe when you tap it, versus the dull thud of a packed section.
- Soil eroded, mulch washed out, or a puddle that will not drain at the base of the spout.
- Damp spots, efflorescence or seepage on the basement wall closest to that downspout.
- Ice building up around the bottom of the spout in winter while other corners stay clear.
Why it matters more than it sounds
A single downspout on a typical GTA roof can move hundreds of litres during one heavy storm. When that volume cannot exit through the pipe, it spills at the eaves and lands right against the foundation — the exact place you spend money keeping water away from.
Over a season that means saturated soil, hydrostatic pressure on the basement wall, and in winter, ice forming where meltwater is trapped instead of drained.
Common causes of blockage in GTA homes
- Compacted leaf matter jammed at the upper elbow where the spout turns down from the trough.
- Shingle granules from an aging roof settling and hardening in the lower elbow.
- Nests built inside the pipe in spring.
- Underground drainage extensions that are themselves blocked, backing water up the visible spout.
What clearing involves
We clear the trough first, then flush each downspout from the top and confirm strong flow at the bottom. If a section is packed, it is opened at the elbow and cleared rather than pushed further down the pipe. We finish by checking that the water is discharging away from the foundation, not pooling against it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just spray a hose down the downspout?
Sometimes that clears a light blockage. If the water backs up out of the top instead of flowing through, the blockage is compacted and forcing more water in usually packs it tighter.
Do downspouts need clearing as often as eavestroughs?
They should be checked every time the eaves are cleared. Flushing them is part of every Northline eavestrough cleaning rather than a separate service call.
Where should a downspout discharge?
Away from the foundation — generally at least 1.5 to 2 metres out, onto a surface that slopes away from the house. Extensions are inexpensive and prevent most basement moisture complaints we hear about.
